Cascades Women - Premiere Womens Dragonboat Team - Bios

As the Cascades Premiere Women's Team we continue to follow
a rigorous dry-land training schedule, in the pool, in the gym and,
of course outdoors on the ski trails, slopes and bike trails in our community.

Our coach:
Julie Beaulieu:

Level 3 NCCP certified coach with 17 years of successful coaching experience. Owner of Bodhi Fitness, Julie is a Canadian Fitness Professional Trainer, a Nutrition and Wellness Specialist, and Paramedic. She was member of
the Canada Games team in 1993 and gold medallist at the Canadian Masters Canoe/Kayak Championships in 2005.

Our drummer:
Jocelyne Kharyati:

Former basketball, football, hockey and softball player, and basketball coach, Jocelyne is taking her energy and passion for team sports to a different dimension. When she is not rooting for the team, she manages leadership development programs for federal public servants.

Our paddlers:

Team Captain
Judy Mason:

Judy is a white water canoe instructor and winner of the Canadian Ski Marathon Lachute Team Trophy in 2004 and 2005. Judy is a high school physical education and outdoor education teacher and coaches field hockey, cross country skiing, and dragon boating. Judy shares her enthusiasm for sports with her husband and two children.

Angie Thomas:
A high school social science and Phys Ed teacher, Angie coaches several high school sports. She has been involved in sports all her life, and has completed many marathons, including the Boston (2005), and participated in the Canadian Ski Marathon for the past two years. Dragon boating is a new sport, but it is fast becoming a favourite.

Cathy Dufour:
Mother of two girls and Coordinator of the Nursing Department at Heritage College, Cathy has played golf, baseball, soccer, and hockey, and has now discovered a new love for "Dragon Boating". She is an avid kayaker/paddler and "lives to paddle and paddles to live".

Andrea Lower:
A Management Consultant in the Information Technology field currently working with the Government of Canada. Andrea is an avid skier, a long time canoeist and participates in competitive soccer and basketball leagues. Andrea has been competing with women's and mixed dragon boat teams for the past four years.

Fiona Fahey:
An elementary school teacher, coach and mother of three boys, Fiona puts into practice the concepts she teaches, of teamwork, effort and commitment, into her own training and dragon boat competition.

Ivana Vouk:
A staunch advocate for the protection of the environment and a keen outdoors enthusiast, Ivana quickly became passionate about dragon boating and now devotes her time and strength to securing her team's success.

Michelle McMahon:
An avid skier, hiker and canoeist, Michelle has been bitten by the competitive bug after three years of paddling. She is the Teaching Director of the local nursery school, tutors school age children and is responsible for an education program at her church. Michelle is mother to two teenagers from whom she draws much of her inspiration.

Leila Myers:
Leila teaches life skills and outdoor education at an alternative high school in the Ottawa area. Growing up as a nationally and internationally competitive synchronized swimmer, and playing varsity waterpolo. A woman with many passions, Leila shares her enthusiasm for positive sport experiences by coaching young athletes.

Kay Kerman:
Kay's flexibility and natural athletic abilities have adapted well to the sport of dragonboat paddling. An original member of the club's women's team, Kay continues to perfect her technique and refuses to take her team hat off, even in bed!

Marie-Josée Lafleur:
As a full time lawyer and mother of four, Marie-Josée never thought it would be possible to paddle once a week...let alone make it to the world championships! Once on the water, paddle at hand, she finds herself unable to resist the challenges of this invigorating sport.

Louise Killens:
Louise is an avid paddler and owner of two physiotherapy clinics. She has been on several Dragon Boat teams, but has found her niche in this competitive women's' boat. Louise is a physiotherapist and volunteer for the Busting Out breast cancer survivor Dragon Boat Team.

Megan Howell Jones:
Currently pursuing an M.A.Sc in biomedical and computer systems engineering, Megan started Dragon Boating 5 years ago (training for 2 years with Team Victoria Gorging Dragons). She trains in taekwon-do with a black belt, runs half marathons and competes in sprint triathlons.

Mary Hutton:
A paddler for four years, and the senior member of the team, Mary might be thought of as a sobering influence and a source of wisdom in the boat. However, her sister paddlers bear witness to the fact that at times she is clownish and singularly lacking in decorum. In spite of these deficits, she is a determined athlete and a proud member of the Cascade Women's team.

Maureen Fehr:
Highly involved with both her family and community, Maureen's energy is boundless. She has been actively involved in numerous community organizations, and currently teaches Nursery School. Maureen is passionate about her love of sports and the outdoors and has found Dragon Boating a natural fit for her competitive spirit.

Debby Whately:
Employed as a lab technologist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Debby has been dragonboating for 3 years including two years on the Canadian Senior Women's Team (medallists at the World Championships in 2004 and 2005). Debby has also competed nationally in waterpolo, touch football and swimming (gold medallist at the World Open Water Swimming Championships in 2000).

Norma Lu Brown:
This is Norma's sixth year paddling. As a Level 2 NCCP, Level 3 CSIA, Level 2 CSCF, Level 1 Course Conductor, Norma has over ten years experience as an Alpine Ski Professional and is supervisor of over 50 adult ski instructors - she appreciates what it takes to succeed at a sport. Norma is also an avid mountain biker and sailor. Norma has run her own web/print design company for over 15 years.

Mireille Brosseau:
Only recently turned her passion for recreational paddling into Dragon Boating with a competitive edge. After an amazing 2005 season, she is focused on extending her reach and power. Mireille enjoys trail running from her back yard to the Gatineau park. She has an MA in Theology and is trained as an interfaith hospital chaplain.

Lisa Landry:
Relatively new to the Dragonboating scene, Lisa's natural athletic ability and discipline are an asset to the team. Lisa has competed in a diverse range of sports; x- country skiing (Nationals 91), badminton (DND Regionals & Nationals 02-05) and equestrian, where she trained with the Germans and French Military. Lisa has been a member of the Canadian Forces for over 11 years and as a mother of three is kept on her toes. Lisa is looking forward to the new challenges and competitions that dragonboating will bring in the future.

Jill Tymchak:
Jill is an electrical engineer who has a passion for long distance gruelling events. She is an avid runner and Ironman athlete as well as a passionate physics teacher. Jill has only been competing in the sport of paddling for 3 years but has already managed to win gold at the Canadian Masters Canoe Competition. Jill is also one of the founding coaches of the Cascades Canoe Club and can be found most times either on the water, coaching or training.

Carolyn Raab
With a long and varied background in sport, Carolyn discovered the challenge and joy of paddling 10 years ago. Having been a member of one of Canada's top mixed dragonboat teams, she joined this highly competitive group of women and is thrilled at the speed and power of the boat. Outside of sport, Carolyn spends time with her family, volunteering within the Chelsea community, and growing Camera Fusion, her camera equipment business.

Karen Moore:
An avid sportswomen, Karen has been a paddler for over four years. She cross trains on the ski slopes, trails and by mountain biking. A mom of two active boys she also finds time to pursue her career as a writer and editor. She is thrilled to be a part of this dynamic team of powerful women, and is proud to have the opportunity to represent Canada at the 2006 CCWC.

Sue Durfy
A mother of 2 avid paddlers Sue, herself, is a rookie to the sport but she felt it was time to take a turn and she will never look back.

An employee of Passport Canada, Sue finds time to play both indoor and outdoor soccer, loves to run or mountain bike the trails of Chelsea with her dog and friends.

She is driven by competition and thrives on the energy she gets from her team mates. "I just love being on the water striving for the perfect stroke, 5am or 5pm."
