Mission Statement

DEVELOP A HIGH PERFORMANCE, COMPETITIVE WOMEN’S DRAGON BOAT TEAM THAT WILL REPRESENT CANADA, OUR CLUB, AND OUR SPONSORS AT THE 2006 CLUB CREW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN TORONTO AND POSITION OURSELVES FOR CONTINUED REPRESENTATION AND SUCCESS IN MALAYSIA IN 2008.

The road to success for the Cascades Women began in 2005 when the all female paddling team qualified for the highest level of dragon boat competition only five months after their coming together as a team.

A mere 16 months later, they earned Silver and Bronze medals at the 2006 International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) Club Crew World Championships (CCWC). This confirmed them as one of our Nation’s top ranked women’s crews and marked the start of their drive for a berth at the 2008 CCWC in Malaysia.

Success! How we got started view movie

The 2007 season was the qualifying year for the 2008 CCWC Worlds. The Cascades Women trained all winter and continued to focus on success. Tough competition was expected during the 2007 paddling season as teams across the country competed for the 5 coveted berths available to the 2008 CCWC. The Nationals in Calgary shaped up to be a very exciting competition - everyone was watching, TV, Newspapers & the Public as the Cascades Women secured Silver overall and a berth to Malaysia 2008!

Cascades Women are seeking sponsorship to attend the Worlds. We invite organizations and individuals to join the all female crew in reaching their goal of dedication and competitive excellence.

Sponsorship & Community Involvement:

Cascades women are committed to an active race schedule as well as participation in community events to ensure sponsorship visibility throughout the region. Our aim is to increase awareness of our all female, competitive team, the sport, and healthy active lifestyles. Corporate sponsorship is key to realizing our goals. Monetary support will provide the means to fulfill our training and community commitments and pave the way to competitive excellence.

In addition to promoting active living and fair play competition, our team members contribute to the continuation and support of other teams including:

o An Inuit paddling program.
o The Busting Out team for the Breast Cancer Action Organization.
o A youth paddling program.
o High School Dragon Boat teams.
o Hosting a training weekend for women who are survivors of breast cancer.
o Introducing the physical value of a paddling regime to the general public.

Our History.... In the spring of 2005, five women paddlers and a seasoned national team coach decided to form an all female 'competitive' women's dragon boat team from the National Capital Region; The Cascades Women. An invitation to the Cascades Club women's paddling community to join such a team was posted and the rest is exciting history....

At Lachine, Quebec in early June 2005 the newly formed team competed together for the first time and placed 4th out of eight strong teams. At the next race, Nortel's Dragon Boat Festival in Ottawa, against a much stiffer competition (including mixed and men-only teams), the team placed fifth overall - they have never looked back.

One team continually held them in 4th place. With this team in their sights they trained rigorously, studied their technique and, when it counted most, were the first across the finish line to earn the berth to represent Canada in the CCWC 2006.

The Cascades Women are proud to be a part of the The Cascades Sports & Social Club of Chelsea, Qc!
Located on the Beautiful Gatineau River.
Cascades Sports and Social Club is located in Chelsea, QC, along the stunning Gatineau River.
The Dragon boat Section of the Club has been in operation for 6 years and is an integral part of
an expanding paddling program operating out of the Club.

Our founding club team started competing in regattas in 1998 as a Mixed Open Class boat. In the Fall of 2002 our members and sponsors raised enough money to buy our own Club dragon boat so that we could train at our home facility.

Among many community, recreational teams, our Club now boasts two competitive teams that compete and win in the Premier Womens and Mixed Masters categories.

Our paddlers are community oriented, family members who love to get out on the water. At 6am
any day of the week, our clubhouse dock is full of paddlers and excited chatter! The majority of
the club member base is from Chelsea, Quebec - but we welcome paddlers from anywhere.

We're out to have fun while working hard to improve and win. We paddle strong, love the sport and
a good social event too and we laugh a lot. Look for our teams at Eastern Canadian dragon boat
regattas. And watch us go for the Podium!
