2007
Dragon Boat Club Crew National Championships, Calgary
Our training paid off here, as the new team on the block we have
passed the long time medalists from the West, False Creek and
we are ever so close to the gold. During both these races we were
neck and neck to the finish line making for great racing and even
better competition - we now have to wait until next season to
place first and beyond! Which we will do!

Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival
June 24 & 25, 2006
Using
this regatta as another learning experience to prepare for the
Worlds , the
Cascades Women won Silver in the Medal rounds .30 seconds
behind the Toronto national team.
4th
Annual Lachine Dragon Boat Knockout Festival
June 10, 2006
The
first race of the season for the Cascades Women was for learning
and checking out the competition. The A-final medal round
was tight with Montreal 'A' taking Gold & Montreal 'B' taking
Silver and Cascades a close Bronze. But more important was to
see how close our training had brought us to these two teams.
Our
paddlers have participated in numerous regattas over our short
Club history. Below you will find some fun commentary on different
regattas and races our team members have been a part of as competitive
or recreational paddlers. (actually once in the boat...we're just
competitive.)

2005:
3rd
Annual Lachine Dragon Boat Knockout Festival
June 12, 2005
The
first race for the newly formed Cascades Women. Having
only 15 regular members at this time, Julie, the coach was paddling
as were a few other women whose names are lost now, coaxed to
get into the boat 'for the fun of it'. The A-final medal round
was lost by a hair against Montreal 'A' & Montreal 'B', pretty
good for a fledgling team - the crowd was wondering who we were.
Nortel
Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival
June 27 & 28, 2005
With
an almost complete crew, the
Cascades Women had to recruit only a couple of ladies,
we came in 5th overall for the two-day regatta against a much
stiffer competition! No medals but proof we have what it takes
to be in the medal rounds - we went off to practice as a complete
team.
Pointe
Claire
July 2005
With a full crew and some serious training as a team under
our belts the
Cascades Women descended on Pointe Claire. Unfortunately
few of our peers were there so we paddled hard and left the other
boats behind, winning the gold. Luckily the next strongest boat
was filled with lovely ladies who accredited their success that
day to trying to chase us which resulted in them actually beating
their competition - for the first time! Glad to be of help.
Welland,
IDBF Club Crew Championship Qualifier
August 2005
Welland attracted a tough field of competitors, Montreal 'A',
Montreal 'B', Pickering to name a few. The
Cascades Women were ready and eager. Against a seasoned
field we placed 4th that weekend by that consumate hair and we
felt it! We came back to Chelsea and trained like mad. We knew
we were as good or better than those teams, we just needed some
experience, and for all of our training to gel.
Quebec
Cup, Montreal, IDBF Club Crew Championship Qualifier
September 2005
Well if Welland was tough, Montreal was daughnting. Everyone wanted
to win as this was the last chance at the berth for the 2006 Worlds.
Montreal 'B' was the team to beat and we had them in our sites.
They were good at the 250m but our race was the 500m and that's
where we got them. It was so tight (see
video) even our coaches were at a loss to know who would win
until the last stroke. The replay told the tale and we we're off
to the Worlds!
The Cascades Women have paddled
as members of other teams in previous years. The following descriptions
include many Cascades Women paddlers as team members.

Dragon Boat Festival
May 29, 2004
The
Cascades Draveurs Master's Team pocketed a Silver
in this, their first regatta of the season, leaving the Gold in
Montreal.
2nd
Annual Lachine Dragon Boat Festival
June 12, 2004
In
the Womens division, 11 crews contested for the bragging
rights for the Lachine championship. Between the preliminary heats
and the knockout finals, each Womens team was guaranteed
a minimum of 3, and a maximum of 6 races for the day. The womens
A-Final pit 4 hungry teams in a hotly contested affair. In a close
opening round, the Cascades River Spirits team was the
first to be eliminated, placing them 4th overall in front of the
strong Onake Women and the local Wong Dragon Boat Club Amazons
Ottawa
Dragon Boat Race Festival
June 27 & 28, 2004
The
Cascades Draveurs mixed team won Silver in the Championship
Final after a well fought battle at Mooney's Bay, Ottawa. Their
home club boasted three teams present for the regatta weekend, at
least 80 Chelsea residents were on hand to show their team spirit.
Twist and Shout, the mixed recreational team placed fourth
in the Fun Final Open Class and the Cascades
River Spirits Women's team luck failed, after finishing
in the Bronze medal place for the Woman's Final they were disqualified
for having to finish outside their lane - rules are rules ladies.
They paddled incredibly considering the conditions from the start.
Toronto
International Dragon Boat Race Festiva
June 21 & 22, 2004
The Cascades Draveurs Dragonboat Team, a mixed masters
team comprised of 25 men and women from multiple sports backgrounds,
competed in the Toronto International Dragon boat Festival on
June 20-21, 2004 and came away winning the International Mixed
Championship in a time of 2:05:93 (Race 110). In a separate category,
competing as an exhibition boat, the Team also recorded the fastest
race time, posting 2:02:39 (Race 116).
Regattas 2003:
September 6-7 - Toronto
Cascades Draveurs Dragonboat Team won the gold medal in the
Consolation finals with a time of 2:05.46 that rivalled the gold
medal winners of the Championship finals time of 2:05.37 as the
second fasted time of the day. The semifinals heat was their downfall,
they faltered and lost their edge in the far lanes. The regatta
was a challenge for those who raced in the two far lanes with their
lack of water and evident sandy shoals. The air was hot and the
excitement high. A great time was had by all as the country folk
from Chelsea partied in the big city.
September 13 (Saturday) - Carleton Place
The captain of Twist & Shout, our mixed recreational
team, was able to scrounge crew from the Cascades Draveurs Dragonboat
Team and the Cascades
River Spirits Women's team to enter this regatta
at the last possible moment. An absolute beautiful day was enjoyed
by all and we managed to scrape enough synchonicity together to
win the Silver. We really gave the Bytown Paddlers a scare
when our photographer quietly mentioned that this team had never
really practiced together as a team. Goes to show that good, solid
training allows a club to mix it up and still bring the medals home.
September 20 (Saturday) - Montreal
Cascades Draveurs Dragonboat Team pulled off a Gold Medal
finish in the Sport category. It was a long hard day but very
rewarding. The Cascades Draveurs Master's Team was
set to defend their Gold Medal title obtained in the Spring,
but they had no competitors. So they were officially invited to
Cape Town 2004 International Regatta to compete.
September 21 (Sunday) - Ottawa
The Cascades Draveurs Dragonboat Team joined forces with
their rivals/friends from down Toronto way and formed the Cassetetes.
Once again good, solid paddling skills brought this quickly formed
team in Silver place behind, you guessed it, the Bytown Paddlers.
The
Cascades River Spirits Women's Team, had the day of their
lives. They brought home the Gold and are still on Cloud
Nine for it. Yippee! All that long distance training really paid
off. Twist
& Shout were back and took the Consolation winnings, too
bad there were no medals for them this time.
